Clown Couture by Gail Sorronda @ MBFWA

Back when we reviewed Louis Vuitton’s creepy pop-art photo series, we told you that nothing’s scarier than a clown. But it seems Gail Sorronda took on the challenge and created a collection for S/S 2012-13 that was both un-scary and completely gorgeous.

Taking place in The Box, an installation space created for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, the show featured spotlighted models that stood in eery silence in front of a post-modern, slo-mo art film. Gail Sorronda’s femme-clowns wore hair caps reminiscent of 20′s bathing beauties and girly babydoll frocks.

This kooky collection featured cheeky pom-pom embellishments, collars, retro polkadots and rainbow brights. There was also a sweet sprinkling of floral jewellery.

The subtle, multi-strap sandal flatform is also perhaps one of the only fashionably acceptable forms of flatform (we’re talking to you, Jeffrey Campbell). Luckily, it was the subtle multi-strap variety that was featured in this collection- nice one!

Clown couture has inspired the likes of Christian Dior, Moschino, and Rei Kawakubo. But it’s hard to find a collection that is both aspirational and wearable. Gail Sorronda’s is both-  we want to own it all!

Whether you’re into existential clown-angst, King Lear style or just need a whimsical wardrobe update- Gail’s your girl.

Get The Look: Windblown Romance

Dear mothers of our Australian readers – happy mothers day! To those who aren’t celebrating mothers day today, why not give your mumsie a hug anyway?

We’ve been feeling a touch blustery this week. Skirts have flown up, hair has been fuzzed and lips have been chap-sticked. And yet there’s a certain windblown romance about all this winter weather. So instead of of crawling back into bed, we decided to fight the freeze and create a girly look to keep you as poised as a pinwheel in this windy season.

This Autumn is set to be particularly tumultuous, so we’ve popped Monique (above) in a skirt made from thick corduroy – a fabric that’s both warm and heavy enough to resist being blown about by the wind. There’s nothing like a simple black coat to take you through cold days and nights. Find one with a tie at the waist to give you a lady-like shape, or a duffle coat with a flare shape to give you more of a younger, girly look.

Tuck in a plain cashmere sweater, slap on some suede booties and add some interest with some kind of fabulous necklace. Voila- you’re a wind warrior!

Here’s how you can get the look!

Topshop spot tights

Juicy Couture black darling coat

Sportsgirl woven chain necklace

J.Crew Cashmere sweater

American Apparel cord circle skirt

Givenchy box bag

Super Giaguro Quasimodo sunglasses

Day three of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, Monique pumps out the pastel trend with this sweet outfit. Taking inspiration from the sherbet hypertrend that’s been dominating catwalks this year, this outfit balances the femininity of a body-con dress with the masculinity of a power blazer.

If you’re going to wear this trend make sure that your blazer flatters your body. If you’ve got curves, buy a blazer that flicks out at the bottom and nips in your waist. If you’re narrow, widen your shoulders up with a puff sleeve. If you’re broad, stay away from shoulder pads and move toward blazers that have a deep V neckline rather than a boatneck. If you’re tall, stay away from cropped blazers, as you may end up looking more stretched than stylish.

This winter, try snapping up a coloured blazer and wear it over your party frock, rather than covering up a pretty outfit with that fluffy jumper you were given for Xmas, 10 years ago. Trust us. We all have them.

Jenny Kee @ Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

Last week, Australian artist Jenny Kee reminded us why brighter is always better with her ‘Art of the Scarf’ collection for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Kee’s series of large printed scarves was showcased at The Box, an installation space at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Sydney. This meant that the garments were paraded in a traditionally french salon style rather than a runway, giving Sneakypeek full leveradge to get all up in this collection’s grill. And what we saw was absolutely magical.

Wattles, eucalyptus leaves, waratahs drooped from the ceiling as doll like models wore radient silk prints and haute headpieces. Behind the designs were a whirlwind of cultural references- Mexican pom-pomed ponchos, Incan prints and African tribal art.

The collection of scarves were actually styled into a wearable pieces by the pair behind Romance Was Born (can’t you tell?), in a heart warming, new-designer -meets-old moment.  The scarves featured the iconic prints of Australian flora that Kee has exhibited in art galleries around the world.

But the cutest part of the collection was the cheeky reference to ‘Flamingo Park’, Kee’s first fashion store which she set up in Sydney’s Strand Arcade.

If any collection were to inspire you to step out wearing nothing but a silk scarf, this would be it.

Alice McCall @ Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week Australia

When we heard that Alice McCall’s Spring/Summer 2012-13 collection was inspired by russian babooshka dolls, we were kind of hoping that each runway model would somehow open up to reveal a slightly smaller model.

Unfortunately, this was anatomically impossible. Yet fortunately, the collection was crazy cool, so we loved it anyway.

Sneakypeek blogger Monique Friedlander joined a raving audience at the Alice McCall runway show last week at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

Although babooshka dolls are often associated with snow, fireplaces and eastern european borscht, the collection was completely summer-ready. The sheer, dreamy pastel fabrics were right on trend, the quaint hand-embroidery was impossibly girly, and the cut-out panels created a worked, couture look.

All that we can say is spasiba, Alice. You rocked our world.

Romance Was Born @ Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

Embarrassed about that Captain America costume you run around in when no one’s at home? You should be.

But lucky for you, you’re not alone. It seems like it’s everyone wants to be a Marvel comic character, starting with the team behind Romance Was Born.

At 9 am on Monday morning,  fashion folk (our blogger Monique Friedlander included) braved Sydney’s autumn chill to see Romance Was Born, the very first show of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week marathon. And once again, design duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales teetered on the threshold of wearability and fantasy with this comic strip inspired collection.

The label worked with comic powerhouse MARVEL to create their Spring/Summer 2012/13 collection, being given access to the highly guarded MARVEL comic archives. We’re hoping that Anna and Luke were also provided with some kind of dust resistant masks- MARVEL’s archives go back to the 30′s!

And yet, it’s obvious in this collection that Romance Was Born’s famously turbulent creativity has been toned down for the commercial market. Each outfit was made up of a variety of separates, usually featuring at least one commercial piece. Sequinned bomber jackets, printed silk shirts and floral high-waisted pants are bound to sell like hot cakes.

As for the lycra unitards, we may have to leave them to The Captain America’s amongst us.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia – a less than glamorous affair

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is the most glamourised event in Australia’s fashion calendar. So why do I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus?

MBFWA has left me a little emotionally overrun. I seem to have felt every emotion possible- from the joy of nabbing one of the gift bags that are usually reserved for the fashion world elite to the stress of setting your camera’s white balance correctly, just in time for the runway show to start.

The amount of paparazzi-style street fashion photography I’ve engaged in is outrageous, and definitely not so glamorous.

I spent much of the week unceremoniously stumbling through the trenches of the media pit and the lofty Overseas Passenger Terminal’s balcony in the hopes of tweeting a picture of top-tier blogger Bryan Boy wearing a beanie swathed in black-widow netting, Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew (above) wearing a dress covered in industrial-grade plastic tubing, and a fellow blogger sporting a Hawaiian lei and a jacket covered in tortured palm leaves.

As for whether these sartorial decisions meet the threshhold of ‘glamorous’, I’ll let you decide.

{ Bloggers front row: Frockwriter, Susie Bubble, Streetpeeper }

There also exists no glamorous way to deal with the exhaustion of seeing 10 runway shows in a row. By day two, I had already hallucinated to the point of eating four bread rolls in a row as a snack. By day 3, I had developed a fear of accidentally committing a cataclysmic fashion fail with my chosen outfit for the day. By the end of the week, my headache pulsed with the beat of the runway music.

But what really kept me going was chatting to the my fellow fashion bloggers about clothes, shopping and styling.

What I’ve come to realise is that, beneath the pretence and prim, MBFWA is in reality a place where people can congratulate each other’s unholy addiction to shopping. And if that’s all it takes to be glamorous, bring on the bread rolls.

Collaboration at the Cross- ATAT & Clover Love

It’s not often that Sneakypeek trots off to Sydney’s Kings Cross for a fashion show. But thank goodness we put on our explorer shoes (ie: slightly lower heels than usual) and took the plunge to visit the ATAT and Clover Love collaboration event at The Backroom, Kings Cross.

In an intimate catwalk, chest-plated models paraded in armour-inspired ATAT jewellery and sheer Clover Love frocks.

We were also delighted to see some of the ATAT jewels blue-lit, and sprinkled amongst tea lights in some kind of nightclub-meets-Aladdin’s Cave scenario. But even more delicious were the feminine black

and white artworks by Clover Love designer, Kirstie Stennings. Can’t get enough of these adorable art-injected fashion events!

We were also able to check out ATAT’s ”Atlanta Reade” ad campaign shot by Simon Upton and featuring models Jira K and Kirstie Penn (above).
